University Resources, Operations and Policies

Operational Excellence Council Mission and Method

Mission

The Operational Excellence Council will help create a culture of service, responsiveness, and continuous improvement within all units (including, but not limited to administrative, IT, research, finance, student services, academics and human resource systems). The Operational Excellence Council will collaborate with units across campus to identify sustainable improvements to processes and policies and to create a culture of service. This approach is centered on efficiency, effectiveness and high levels of service.

Method

Through the stewardship of Alan Cooper, Ph.D., and A. Brian Leander, Ph.D., OEC members received training in Lean Principles and Service Excellence. Members of the Council meet monthly as a think tank, evaluating processes from the perspective of those we serve and suggesting improvements for optimal efficiency and service.

The OEC members found the education in lean principles to be so fulfilling, they asked if a certificate program could be launched to explore this topic in greater depth. As a result, the Lean Certificate program has been developed for the University community to explore.

Members work with an understanding that we serve varied groups on campus and beyond, from students to colleagues in other departments, alumni and members of our greater community.

What We Do

Working with President Riordan and the campus community, co-leads Alisa Cano and Gene Palma determine processes and systems to evaluate for optimal operational effectiveness. Service excellence is a theme of paramount importance; we aim to assist department colleagues in delivering optimal service to all constituents in the most efficient way possible.

OEC would like to partner with departments around campus to improve workplace efficiency and service excellence. If you would like to suggest a process, system or service delivery that is in need of evaluation or improvement, please visit our Nominate a Process form.
