Voluntary Salary Reduction

Policy Statement

This policy is for any employee who volunteers to reduce their salary for a specified amount of time.

Reason for Policy

This policy has been instituted in response to the financial stress the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on the University. Employees who are willing to participate in a voluntary salary reduction may do so, if they so choose.

Who Is Governed by this Policy

Faculty and Staff

In response to the financial stress the pandemic has placed on the University, Adelphi is making voluntary salary reductions available to all employees. The savings generated by these reductions will be used in this fiscal year to reduce the negative financial impact of the crisis. If an employee wishes to participate in this voluntary effort, they must contact the Office of Human Resources at to process any adjustment they wish to make.

The employee’s decision to participate in a voluntary salary reduction will be kept strictly confidential. Any salary reduction must be documented in writing and signed by each employee choosing to reduce their salary. New York State forms LS 54 (for hourly employees) and LS 59 (for exempt salaried employees) will be used for this purpose. Additionally, you understand that all benefits based on salary, such as 403(b) contributions and life insurance costs, will be reduced as well. This voluntary salary reduction agreement will be stopped if Adelphi mandates a salary reduction affecting you during this time period. This action is voluntary and confidential and does not affect any other terms of employment.

Voluntary: proceeding from the will or from one’s own choice or consent; acting or done of one’s own free will without valuable consideration or legal obligation.

Salary Reduction: an agreement between the employer and the employee in which the employee agrees to a reduction in salary by a dollar amount or percentage.
