Reason for Policy

Adelphi University is committed to the safety of all individuals in its community. The University has particular concern for those who are potentially vulnerable, including minor children, who require special attention and protection. This Policy establishes guidelines for those in the University community who may work or interact with individuals under 18 years of age, with the goal of promoting the safety and wellbeing of minors.

Policy

The employment of persons under the age of 16 is prohibited. Employment of persons between the ages of 16 and 18 carries restrictions as to the length of shift and time of day. Because minors are restricted from performing certain types of work, and between certain hours, the terms and conditions of employment must be approved in advance by the Office of Human Resources.

Procedures

The department must have budget approval prior to the hiring of any individual. Employment of minors must be coordinated through the Office of Human Resources with the appropriate paperwork (working papers – form AT-19-4-27720), and new hire paperwork completed and presented to the Office of Human Resources prior to employment.

Forms

All minors must provide the Office of Human Resources with working papers (New York State Education Department’s Student General Employment Certificate form AT-19-4-27720) prior to beginning work.
